What do you crave when you're eating clean? on a health and wellness journey? CHOCOLATE! The holy grail of a "health and wellness indulgence” is here: the rise of sweet proteins that don't spike your glucose. A recent Fast Company spotlight highlights Oobli’s protein-sweetened chocolate as a standout in World Changing Ideas 2025. Their sweet proteins (like brazzein and monellin) replace up to 90% of sugar delivering indulgent taste with just 1g added sugar per serving, zero blood sugar impact, no gut microbiome disruption, and sustainable production via precision fermentation. "It's the world's first protein sweetener" that can be used in a range of sweet drinks and foods. Why it matters for health & wellness brands: • Better-for-you indulgence ~ Consumers demand treats that are both delicious and aligned with their wellness goals. • Clean-label, no compromise ~ No artificial sweeteners, no sugar alcohols. Just nature-identical proteins with GRAS validation, offering clear #marketing advantages. • Tapping the protein wave ~ With #GLP-1 drugs shifting eating habits toward smaller, higher-impact bites, the demand for protein-rich indulgences is skyrocketing! My take on brand opportunities: Product innovation: Launch desserts, bars, yogurts, or beverages sweetened with protein-based ingredients in smaller portions. Storytelling angle: Highlight real impact with phrases like “90% less sugar,” “zero glycemic spike,” and “gut-friendly protein.” Market differentiation: In a crowded wellness space, “protein-sweetened” can stand out more than “no sugar,” “keto,” or “low-carb.” 💡 My final take: I believe this is a sensorial shift. Consumers don’t want to compromise on taste or health and protein-sweetened products/chocolate delivers both. I’m excited to see wellness brands evolve from just labeling to ingredient-level innovation. This is a high-protein, low-sugar future that actually tastes good and is good for you. Would you try a protein-sweetened treat made with brazzein and monellin? I am excited to try it! #HealthAndWellness #CPGTrends #FunctionalFoods #ProteinBoom

Congrats to our portfolio company Oobli, a graduate of our IndieBio program and now a winner in Fast Company’s 2025 World Changing Ideas Awards, for reinventing sweetness with science. Using precision fermentation, Oobli produces brazzein, a sweet protein found in a rare West African fruit, that can replace up to 90% of sugar in foods and drinks. It's up to 5,000x sweeter than sugar, doesn’t spike blood sugar, and digests like any other protein. It’s also a win for the planet. For every 1% reduction in sugar production, Oobli’s proteins could help save: 🌱 525,000 acres of land 💧 88 billion gallons of water 🌍 1 million metric tons of CO2 The FDA reviewed their proteins with no objections, and now global food giants like Grupo Bimbo are preparing to launch products using this breakthrough ingredient. We’re proud to back Oobli as they build a more sustainable and healthy food future. 📖 Read more about them in their Fast Company feature by Adele Peters: https://lnkd.in/gCwPhbUY #FoodTech #PrecisionFermentation #Sustainability #SugarAlternative #AltProtein

Today, we’re featuring Oobli, a company replacing sugar with sweet proteins. Oobli recently raised $18M in Series B1 funding and formed a strategic partnership with Ingredion Incorporated to co-develop low-sugar ingredients that meet growing consumer demand for better sweeteners. Their proteins are produced using precision fermentation, and Oobli is the first company to bring them to market in consumer products through their line of chocolates — though the proteins can be used in a wide range of applications. The company is based in California and has a team of around 30, united by a mission to transform how we experience sweetness. Thanks to Ron Bryant, Head of Sales at Oobli, for speaking with us about the company’s mission, culture, and what Oobli looks for in new hires! ________ We help innovative food and ag companies grow by hiring the right talent. In this series, Daniel highlights the teams behind that growth and the products changing our food system. Follow Food Impact Partners for more content like this and for insights on hiring.
